Tight and short underwear that cover a small area – it ends at the top of the thighs – that is what women’s briefs are. It started in Chicago, USA in 1935, but they were first sold three years later in UK. They rose to popularity as quick as it gets, this apparel sold up to 3,000 pairs a week, and within the first month the number got up to 30,000 pairs. It’s been almost eighty years since briefs have been introduced to the market, however, they still keep their popularity big and demand high.
Classic, Granny, Full Briefs.
This is a highly comfortable model, which has its easily noticeable downsides – it somewhat lacks the edge in the aesthetics department. There are plenty younger women who do not find this model nice to wear, mostly because they believe it makes them look older. And for many women, form over function seems to be the case.
Hi-Cut or French Cut Briefs
Hi-cut or French cut briefs have their similarities to bikini briefs. They sit right above the hips but unlike the bikini, the waistband is in fact, closer to the natural place of the waist. The thing that truly defines this type of briefs is the high and narrow sides they have. This model of underwear provides full coverage and the legs seams and waistband should induce no rolling, pinching and pulling against the skin. What is more, the bottom should not bunch and ride up and has to be covered completely.
Boyshorts or Boy Leg Briefs
This type of briefs usually offers full front and rear coverage. Boyshorts are known to provide more coverage than hipster briefs and the sides are also fully covered. The inspiration for the design clearly comes from men’s boxer briefs and there are plenty of styles to choose from and a lot of lengths and colours as well.
Hipster or Hip Hugger Briefs
As the name has made it clear already, hipster briefs sit on the hips. The main difference from briefs is the fact that there is a fuller rear coverage compared to the of hi-cut briefs and bikinis and the top half is absent. Hipster brief has a fit that is very reminiscent of the one used in regular briefs but there is also a low rise waistband that is resting on the hips.
Tangas or Cheekys Briefs
This style of briefs reminds bikini or hipster briefs from the front. The main difference is a higher cut back which reveals more of a bum.
Bikini or String Bikini Briefs
This type of briefs sits higher on the hips and provides a full rear coverage. However, the side of these briefs is very thin and narrow and is sometimes referred to as a ‘string’. The fit of the briefs is pretty much alike to the one a full brief offers and if it is properly fitted, it does not bunch up the body, doesn’t ride it up, and rests comfortably on the hips.
Earliest known use of underwear resembling modern panties is dating back to 4,400 BC. When Egypt has in its Badari period, the tombs had statuettes in them that showed the modern triangular panty – triangular in shape and with a low amount of cloth around the hips. Many modern cultures went on to create their own styles of underwear but this panty of Badarian statues closely resembles the modern panties we have today.
